1632, Zurbaran, Metropolitan Museum of Art. The only pic I've found of someone both wearing and WORKING blackwork
Blackwork in Red
Key pattern from the Rosemarkie Cross, original. This is a great pattern for "uneven" weave - on evenweave, comes out as a square.
Marriage at Cana
1500, Gerard David, the Louvre This is a Flemish example, but the earliest paintings showing blackwork I've found so far are all "Marriage at Cana" pictures, most of them Spanish. The bride always has a beautiful blackworked shift.
Blackwork in Green
Cuff for a gentleman's shirt - original pattern
Husband and Wife
1523, Lorenzo Lotto, the Hermitage A his-and-hers set of blackwork body linens here!
Blackwork in Blue
Tablecloth detail. Patterns from "The New Carolingian Modelbook"
Lady Kytson
1573, George Gower, the Tate. I love this outfit. Someday I will make it.
Blackwork in Miniature
"Bookmark" site favors, various filling patterns. I made 50 of these, each one different.
Portrait of a Gentleman
1548, Unknown(British) Royal Collection. The dense look of the embroidery here inspired the blackwork shirt I made for the Outlands A&S competition a few years ago.
Blackwork in Perpetuity
Blackwork in Perpetuity - I may never finish this sleeve....
Marriage at Cana
1495, Master of the Catholic Kings, National Gallery of Art Washington DC. Another "Marriage" - this one also has a blackwork tablecloth.
