1500, Gerard David, the Louvre This is a Flemish example, but the earliest paintings showing blackwork I've found so far are all "Marriage at Cana" pictures, most of them Spanish. The bride always has a beautiful blackworked shift.

I stitch in the evenings while I "listen" to TV - Xelidoni took around 60 hours of stitching - mind you, that's with stopping to actually watch something, or have a snack, or untangle the cat from my floss... :-D
